An unsatisfying victory for Oxfordshire in the U125 Chiltern Chess League

Oxfordshire’s Under 125 team has won this year’s Chiltern League, but it was something of a hollow victory.

Oxfordshire won by default, as Buckinghamshire did not turn up for the contest – a disappointment for the 12 Oxfordshire players who turned up ready for a fight at Wellington College in Crowthorne on April 28th.

Oxon U125 captain Steve Bennett described the no-show by Bucks as “quite concerning” and confirmed that the issue would be discussed at the forthcoming Chiltern League AGM this coming Sunday 12th May.

Although disappointing not to have had a proper final, Oxfordshire shouldn’t feel too guilty at the win – having already beaten Bucks (8-4), Hants (9.5-2.5) and Berks (8.5-3.5) in the run-up to what was supposed to have been the grand final.

Fortunately the team who travelled from Oxfordshire to Crowthorne, including a number of Cumnor players, didn’t completely waste their time as it was decided to pit juniors vs adults in the lack of other opponents.

Needless to say, Oxfordshire’s strong juniors won convincingly!

Cumnor chess players ready for Chiltern League U125 final against Buckinghamshire

This Sunday (April 28th 2013) will finally see Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire chess teams compete for the Chris Stothert Trophy, in division 3 of the Chiltern League.

And Cumnor players are strongly represented on the Oxfordshire team!

You’ll remember that this final game was originally scheduled for March, but was postponed because of heavy snow.

The match will begin at 2pm on Sunday, at Wellington College in Crowthorne.

The great news is that Oxon U125 has already beaten Bucks (8-4), Hants (9.5-2.5) and Berks (8.5-3.5) in the run-up to the final.

A quirk in the rules means that Oxfordshire still has to play, and this weekend’s match will decide who finally wins the trophy.

Please keep your fingers crossed for Oxfordshire, and your fellow Cumnor Chess Club players!
