Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Club is now closed for the Christmas period. It has on the whole been an exciting time since reopening in September. Cumnor 1 currently sit in second place in the first division while Cumnor 2 sit forth in the 3rd division.

The Club will be closed on the 23rd and the 30th of December and will reopen again on Thursday the 6th (unless we get told otherwise). But the club will be open for a Lichess Cumnor Clash on both Thursdays, kick off at 7 to remember the good old days of last winter(?!). The Cowley Blitz will also be online again this year, for more information follow this link.

Hopefully I will see some of you online at either Cumnor Clash or at the Cowley Blitz but if I don’t Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

“Merry Christmas
May your every New Year dreams (of mating with a Bishop and Knight) come true!”

Ray Starkie Prize for the Best Game During the Season

You have only until Easter Monday to submit your best game of the season!

Well we’re coming to the end of season like no other and that means it’s time for the Award Ceremony. Lacking our usual structure what we can give out is limited, but we will hand out the Lester Millin trophy to the best junior, and we also intend to award the Ray Starkie trophy for the best game played in the two Mike Duck tournaments.

With regard to the latter Matt Rose has again kindly agreed to act as judge. So get your amazing brilliancies and subtle positional masterpieces to Roger Thetford via email in pgn format – You can contact Roger with the contacts link which you can find on the left hand side of the page, or via the link below. The deadline for submission is 5th April (Easter Monday), and the winner will be announced at the May committee meeting.

New Grades are out

The Summer 2020 grading list has been published and can be found here.

Congratulations for everyone who’s grade went up and commiserations on those who’s went down.

As we all know the season finished early this year so some players have played less games this year.

Tonight should have been our last Chess evening before our summer break, we are keeping an open minded about opening the club in September but obviously this will on be done once we know it is safe to do so. Until such a time arises the weekly Cumnor Clash will be on lichess every Thursday, a link can be found here to watch or join in.

Cumnor v Cowley match this Sunday!

With the way the world is at the moment we will have to get used to finding a new “normal”. We have been in contact with our friends over in Cowley and we are very happy to announce that we are going to play at 3.30 pm on THIS Sunday, (SUNDAY 19th APRIL) a friendly match between the two clubs.

We have 8 players and the time limit will be 45 minutes + 15 second increment, and it will take place on www.lichess.org. This is exactly the same as the 4NCL have been doing so we’ll follow their instructions – see http://www.4ncl.co.uk/data/Guide_to_Playing_Games_on_Lichess.pdf.

The pairings will be released sometime tomorrow. Cowley did win the toss and will be White on odd numbered boards.

If this works we will see if they are up for a rematch, or see if somebody else fancies taking on the might of Cumnor!

In other news club nights are still being run online at Lichess every Thursday going forward, we are running a little tournament to see who finishes top of the leader board every week. The current scores on the doors are:

Stuart 7
Simon 5
Eldar 4
Gareth and Jon D’Souza-Eva 3
Ian, Robin and Nigel 2
Liam and Mark Sayers 1

Stay safe everyone!
