Grandmaster Peter Wells Simultaneous Display

Grandmaster Peter Wells Simultaneous Display

Peter will be holding his annual simultaneous display at Witney Chess Club’s Ducklington Village Hall venue on: Monday 9 April 2018 at 7.15 pm.

Grandmaster Peter Wells
The evening is open to all Oxfordshire players, and we are very much hoping that, as with last season’s simultaneous display, it will be well attended such that further such evenings can be arranged in the future.

So that we can cover at least some of our costs we are proposing the following prices:

Adults booked in advance: £10.00 (on the night £12.00)

Juniors booked in advance: £5.00 (on the night £6.00)

We are keeping prices as low as possible (i.e. we expect to break even at best) to encourage as many people as possible to attend, and are also offering junior entries at half price in accordance with our aim of promoting junior chess in Oxfordshire.

Light refreshments (coffee, tea etc) will be included in the price.

Please see the Witney website to book your place.

Cumnor player beats chess grandmaster!

Congratulations to Cumnor Chess Club’s very own Gareth Stevens, who managed to cause a major upset last week by beating a grandmaster.

That would be a brilliant result in itself, but to make his victory over Peter Wells GM in a simultaneous demonstration even more glorious – Gareth was playing with the black pieces!

Gareth’s final move is wonderful. White cannot recapture the rook, because he will be putting himself in check. Although Black’s Queen could be taken by white, that’s not frightening to Black who is threatening to move his knight to g3, with a devastating checkmate.

Gareth Stevens is feeling pretty good about his position

Well done to Gareth for his brilliant and stylish game.

Watch out Magnus!

Our friends at Witney Chess Club are hosting a lecture with Grandmaster Peter Wells next Monday night (11th March 2013).

The event, which starts at 7:30pm, sounds like a great opportunity to hear from one of England’s very best chess players and maybe even pick up some tips to improve your own play!

The lecture will be held at Ducklington Village Hall in Standlake Road, Ducklington.

More details about the event, and how to pre-book your place, can be found on Witney Chess Club’s website.

We expect any Cumnor Chess Club players who attend the event to come back with renewed vigour, and at least an extra 30 points added to their ECF grade..
