Cumnor 1 vs Oxford City 2 [Match Report]

Last Thursday saw Cumnor 1 gain their first league win of the season at home to Oxford City 2.

After suffering a couple of heavy losses in recent weeks, it was Cumnor’s turn to move up a gear and win handsomely.

Cumnor 1 City 2
1 Stevens, Gareth (149) 0 – 1 Smith, Roger A ( )
2 Varney, Andrew (146) 1 – 0 Biswas, Karl (147)
3 Glenn, Liam (140) 1 – 0 Yates, John O (142)
4 Varney, Daniel (133) 1 – 0 Godfrey, David (140)
5 Sayers, Mark (134) 1 – 0 Smith, Lucy K (125)
6 Carr, Robin (126) 1 – 0 Brooke, Ian R (109)
Match played: 21 Nov 2013 5 – 1

The first to finish was Daniel who played the Smith-Morra gambit as white. He sacrificed two pieces in the build-up to the mate.

Gareth on top board played against a Smith-Morra and suffered the same fate, 1-1.

Andrew won a piece early in the game and went in to win, while Liam was under a lot of pressure but wiggled his away out to end up in a better position.

Robin and Mark also won to produce a 5-1 win for Cumnor 1!

Even more shocking is that this win puts us up to 4th place (for now at least) in Division Two.

Current state of Division 2

Wantage 1 vs Cumnor 1 [Match Report]

When Cumnor 1 last pitted itself against Wantage 1 in a chess match, we pulled off an unexpected victory.

So, it was with fingers crossed for a repeat performance that the Cumnor 1 team again made the journey to Wantage 1 for an away game.

Well, we always knew it was going to be an uphill struggle against a strong Wantage team, with their players outgunning ours with higher grades on every board – and, sadly, that’s borne out by the result.

Wantage 1 Cumnor 1
1 Bush, Martin L (158) 1 – 0 Stevens, Gareth (149)
2 Hemmings, Peter (143) 0 – 1 Glenn, Liam (140)
3 Langham, Rod E (142) 1 – 0 Sayers, Mark (134)
4 Morris, Stephen A (141) 1 – 0 Varney, Daniel (133)
5 Brown, Gordon D (140) 1 – 0 Alvarez, Francisco (114)
6 Spalding, George H (131) 0 – 1 Cluley, Graham (113)
Match played: 8 Oct 2013 4 – 2

Liam Glenn (140) started well as Black, and gained a past pawn on d3 early on in the middle game. However, his opponent quickly countered and he lost an exchange – Bishop for Rook. Later analysis revealed that this wasn’t as bad as first imagined, and Liam managed to gain a better pawn structure that allowed him to queen his extra pawn. Well done Liam!

A solid game was played by Mark Sayers (134), who gained a strong initiative in the middle game. Mark played a tactical sequence with a strong attack on his opponent’s King, but missed an opportunity to gain a winning position. Unfortunately, he fell behind on time and this eventually proved to be his downfall as there was just five minutes left as the game entered the end game.

Pako Alvarez (114) “fought like a lion”, but sadly it wasn’t enough on this occasion. Despite winning an extra pawn with his Queen’s Gambit opening, the situation changed rapidly and Pako found himself under permanent attack. Pako felt forced to exchange his king’s rook for his opponent’s knight. After that, his Wantage opponent mopped up the board by exchanging pieces and winning material.

George Spalding vs Graham Cluley. Black to moveMost chuffed of the Cumnor players on the night was Graham Cluley (113), on board six, who claims he played an opening he’d never tried in a match before – the Dutch Stonewall.

Almost certainly rapidly leaving the normal book line, Graham managed to pin his opponent’s knight and increase pressure against his opponent’s king side. However, the noose wasn’t tight enough, and white was able to swap his Queen for a black rook and bishop. This proved to be a sensible exchange for White, who had mating chances.

Ultimately, however, the combination of Graham’s Queen versus white’s knight and rook proved too powerful, allowing him to mop up white’s pawns, push his own and force a win.

Thanks to everyone who played.

Cumnor 2, Division 4: season report for 2012/2013

chessboardWith the chess-playing season over, it’s time to look back over our second team’s performance in the last year.

The second team gives a chance for the Juniors and the improving players to have a competitive game in the league, playing in OCA Division 4.

In our first game we started well with a 5-1 win over Cowley 4.

However, despite that good start there was bad news on the horizon. We lost the next 4 games against MCS/B2 (1.5-4.5), St Claire’s (2-4), Cowley Workers 2 (2.5-3.5) and City 4 (2.5-3.5).

We did manage to pick up form before Christmas with a 4-2 win over Wantage 2, and carried on after the new year with a 5-1 win over Cowley 4.

Cumnor 2 ended January with a 4-2 win against Witney 4.

A loss to MCS/B2 4.5-1.5 was followed by a 5.5-0.5 win over St Claire’s which was the highest win for either team of the season.

There was an unfortunate blip when we forgot an away fixture against City 4. As we defaulted on all six boards we were penalised one point. Ouch.

However, we picked a win against Cowley Workers 2, 4.5-1.5, and our only draw 3-3 versus Wantage 2. Our final game was against Witney 4 which ended with a 4-2 loss.

Cumnor 2 ended up finishing 6th with 12 points (one defaulted point) which means we will continue to compete in Division 4 next season.

Division 4 results, 2012/2013 season

Well done to Pako, Susana, Steve, Roger, Graham, Liam, Richard, Leo, Marc, Mike, Michaela, Nathan, Robert, David, Daniel, Zoe, Clive and Ann – who all played this season, and for the rest of Cumnor Chess Club for their support.

Stat of the season: 18 chess players competed for Cumnor 2 this season, enough for 3 teams! This demonstrates, I believe, the healthy state of Cumnor Chess Club – as we can draw on a lot of talent!

The final table can be found here on the OCA website and the scores of individual team players can be found here.

Cumnor 1, Division 2: season report for 2012/2013

chessboardWith the chess-playing season over, it’s time to look back over our first team’s performance in the last year.

As the new boys in Division 2 of the Oxford and District Chess League (ODCL), we knew it was going to be a difficult season, playing against many well-established teams.

Our best hope was to finish above Cowley Workers (who also were promoted with us from Division 3 due to the leagues being rearranged).

Our first game was against Witney 2, who were clearly looking for a strong start as they put out a strong team meaning we lost 5-1.

We picked up our first point with an away draw at Bicester who were the team relegated from Division 1 last season.

Another draw against Cowley Workers didn’t really help either team pull away from each other.

This was followed by two 2.5-3.5 losses – to City 2 and MCS/B1 – and we ended 2012 at home to Wantage 1 with a 3-3 draw.

At the mid point we hade picked up 3 draws and 3 losses from our first 6 games.

The new year started with the first league win away to Witney 2, beating them 3.5-2.5. This was followed by another 2.5-3.5 loss to Bicester 1.

The Cowley Workers game looked like it could decide who was going to be relegated back to Division 3, with us on 5 points and them still on 1, a real 4 pointier.

Fortunately, we managed to scrape past the finishing post first (but Steve did make us sweat a little) 3.5-2.5. This put Cumnor Chess Club’s first team 6 points clear.

Our final 3 games were a mixed bag with a 5-1 loss to City 2, followed by a close 3.5-2.5 defeat to (champions-elect) MCS/B1.

Our final game was away to Wantage 1 in which we picked up a win, finishing the season on a high.

Cumnor 1 ultimately finished 6th in the division with 9 points – 8 clear of the relegated Cowley Workers whose solitary point was from our draw back in November – and only (!) 10 points from top.

Division 2 result

It was our highest league finish and has kept us in the same division for next season, which is a rarity for Cumnor 1.

Well done to Andrew, Daniel, Gareth, Graham, Liam, Mark, Michael, Pako, Robin, Roger and Steve who played for Cumnor 1 this season, and everyone else for their support!

Stat of the season: Out of the 72 boards Cumnor 1 played on during the 2012/2013 season we were outgraded on 52 occasions.

The final table for Division 2 can be seen here on the ODCL website, and players’ scores can be found here.

The Frank Wood Shield

During the year, The Frank Wood Shield (The Oxfordshire chess equivalent to the FA Cup) was a welcome distraction from the league. We had a bye in the first round so our first game was in round two versus Witney 3 who we beat 4-2.

Our next game in the cup was the quarter-final where we played Witney 2. Witney 2, who were eventual finalists, beat us 4-2 which ended our little run.

Wantage 1 vs Cumnor 1 [Match Report]

The Cumnor 1 chess team caused an upset on Tuesday night, managing to beat Wantage 1.

Wantage 1 Cumnor 1
1 Walden, Andrew (204) ½ – ½ Varney, Andrew (143)
2 Bush, Martin L (149) 1 – 0 Sayers, Mark (141)
3 Brown, Gordon D (148) 0 – 1 Glenn, Liam (129)
4 Piggott, Roly (143) ½ – ½ Jones, Michael (117)
5 Richards, Simon A (141) 0 – 1 Varney, Daniel (111)
6 Spalding, George H (136) ½ – ½ Bennett, Steven (108)
Match played: 23 Apr 2013 2½ – 3½

With some of Cumnor 1’s players unavailable to play because of vacations, Wantage might have been expecting a less than challenging match. How mistaken they were!

Liam Glenn (129) was the first to finish his game, somehow managing to get a win after his opponent weakened his kingside attempting an attack. Liam managed to deflect the attack and gained enough material to force his opponent to resign.

Junior player Daniel Varney (111), who was playing his first ever game in Division 2, and his second game in two consecutive evenings for Cumnor, won against Simon Richards (141) with a very quick Smith-Morra kingside attack.

Steve Bennett (108) and Mike Jones (117) both drew against, again, much stronger players with both playing with black.

Andrew Varney (143) secured the win for Cumnor, with a draw against a player rated a mighty 204! Understandably, Andrew feels pretty good about that!

Mark Sayers (141) was the last Cumnor player to finish. Mark played a very long game, and with only seconds left on his clock found himself in a Knight vs Bishop endgame. Unfortunately, Mark had the knight.

Cumnor 1 can feel very proud of their performance against Wantage, outranked as we were on every board by the opponents’ grades.

Nice work chaps!

Witney 4 vs Cumnor 2 [Match Report]

On Monday night, a team of junior players from Cumnor Chess Club were given a chance to shine in an away game against Witney 4.

Witney 4 Cumnor 2
1 Truran, Joseph (120) 0 – 1 Varney, Zoe (114)
2 Holton, Jake (99) 1 – 0 Varney, Daniel (111)
3 Hauer, Isabel (94) 1 – 0 Sterrie, David (80)
4 Watkins, Seb (87) 0 – 1 Bennett Anton, Susana (11)
5 Manning, Andy (29) 1 – 0 Shakespear, Michaela (-)
6 Lloyd, Ben (-) 1 – 0 Ives, Leonora (-)
Match played: 22 Apr 2013 4 – 2

On the top board, Zoe Varney (114) played extremely well and managed to beat Joseph Truran (120), while Daniel Varney (111) had a long game on board two which he eventually lost.

David Sterrie (80) also lost on board three, but Susanna Bennett (11) stopped the rot on board four with a win.

The bottom two boards had Michaela Shakespear () and Lenora Ives ()– both of whom have only played once before for Cumnor. Although they both lost, they made a good game of it are likely to have learned something useful from the experience.

Cumnor 2 vs Wantage 2 [Match Report]

Back in December, a team of six brave Cumnor 2 chess players visited Wantage – seizing victory 4-2 on Wantage 2’s home turf.

Last night, it was time for the rematch, and Wantage 2 visited Cumnor Chess Club to play the Cumnor 2 squad.

Cumnor 2 Wantage 2
1 Glenn, Liam (129) 0 – 1 Hemmings, Peter (132)
2 Jones, Michael (117) ½ – ½ Booker, Julian (115)
3 Cluley, Graham (118) 1 – 0 Barker, Richard (113)
4 Bennett, Steven (108) 1 – 0 Cordon, Ray (104)
5 Steel, Robert (89) 0 – 1 Rey, Alvaro (88)
6 Harrop, Richard (56) ½ – ½ Hockaday, Derek ( )
Match played: 11 Apr 2013 3 – 3

Here’s how the different games went:

Liam Glenn (129), played Black on board one against the experienced Peter Hemmings (132), and appeared for most of the game to be in a stronger position. Unfortunately, as Liam seemed to be pressing home his advantage, he overlooked something which had appeared insignificant, and the tide rapidly turned. Well-considered play by White resulted in a win for Wantage, and put an end to a series of excellent match results for Liam.

Michael Jones (117), on board two, feels he’s had a bad run recently, and approached the chessboard with a certain degree of trepidation.

Playing as White, Mike played a fairly closed game, hoping his opponent would get bored and make a silly mistake. Mike’s experienced opponent didn’t fall into the trap, however, and Mike’s attempts to get his bishop behind enemy lines and force a mating position were rebuffed.

Realising that the game had reached an impasse, Black offered a draw which Mike gladly accepted.

Although claiming he couldn’t remember the last time someone played the Ruy Lopez against him, Graham Cluley (118) played confidently as Black, and managed to pin down most of his opponent’s major pieces, tying them in the tightest of knots.

White critically weakened his defences by advancing the pawns in front of his King, perhaps to attempt some counterplay, but the killer blow was a dramatic Bishop sacrifice by Graham after which there was no doubt as to the outcome. A win for Cumnor 2!

On board four, Cumnor 2 captain Steve Bennett (110) played strongly with an English opening, and gained a piece over his opponent. Careful, methodical play ultimately resulted in another win for Cumnor 2.

Meanwhile, on board five, Robert Steel (89) lost his match. However, I didn’t see any of it – so I can’t possibly explain what happened! Robert, if you want to fill in the gaps, please feel free!

Richard Harrop (56), on board six, spent most of the game a pawn done. He managed to rectify this in the endgame, but due to two opposite-squared bishops the game ended in a draw due to “repetitive check syndrome”!

Cumnor 2 vs Wantage 2 result:
3 – 3

Cumnor 2’s next chess match is an away game against Witney 4, on Monday 22 April.

Close but no Cigar… Cumnor 1 vs MCS/B1 [Match Report]

Cumnor 1 lost a very close match last night against Champions elect Magdalen College School Blackbirds 1 (MCS/B1).

Cumnor 1 MCS/B 1
1 Varney, Andrew (143) 0 – 1 Daggitt, Matthew (186)
2 Sayers, Mark (141) 0 – 1 D’Souza-Eva, Jon (191)
3 Stevens, Gareth (143) ½ – ½ Cole, Graham (137)
4 Glenn, Liam (129) 1 – 0 Ward, Eric (140)
5 Carr, Robin (128) 1 – 0 Sayers, David (124)
6 Jones, Michael (117) 0 – 1 Bush, Ian (120)
Match played: 21 Mar 2013 2½ – 3½

Robin was the first to finish (a small surprise) when David Sayers miscalculated and called a check when there was none, allowing Robin to take his Queen.

Gareth managed a draw with black, while I won a piece and my opponent resigned putting us 2.5-0.5 up.

However, Mike lost a piece, and Mark lost the exchange and was always going to have a difficult game from then on.

Andrew was the last to finish with a very complicated endgame with very little time for either players, and went on to lose on time.

Our last game of the season is away to Wantage in a month’s time.
